The PAWS Approach

A little clarity

Frequently Asked Questions

A few useful answers before you take the next step with your cat.

About the membership

01

What is the PAWS Membership?

A guided path of short audio lessons, each ending with one small practical action, plus a kind community. It is built on the four PAWS lenses: Predictability, Agency, Welfare and Security, with optional mini-courses for specific situations. One membership covers the lessons and the community together.

02

Who is it for?

Cat guardians who would like to understand their cat better and make everyday life easier, from new kitten parents to senior-cat companions, without guilt or judgement. The core path is designed for every life stage and is released lesson by lesson.

03

Can I join from outside Canberra?

Yes. The membership is online, so you can join from anywhere in Australia or overseas.

04

Is the membership a replacement for a consultation?

No. The membership teaches the framework at your own pace. A consultation gives you a plan built around your cat and your household. If your cat’s behaviour needs a proper look, a consultation is still the right place to start, and plenty of people do both.

What’s open and how it’s released

01

What can I start with today?

The first lessons of Understanding Your Cat, and the Brushing and Claw Trimming mini-courses. New lessons are added regularly.

02

Is the whole course available now?

Not yet. The full course is designed and scripted, and it is being recorded and released lesson by lesson. We’ll always be clear about what’s open and what’s coming.

03

Do I have to go in order?

The core lessons are released in order, so your understanding builds step by step. Mini-courses are optional, and you can open them whenever you need them. As the membership grows, you’ll also be able to choose your own way through: follow the full journey, or head straight to what your cat needs.

04

What are mini-courses?

Short sets of lessons for a specific situation, such as brushing, claw care, vet visits, moving house or introducing a new pet. Brushing and Claw Trimming are open now; other mini-courses will open as they’re recorded.

05

How long are the lessons?

They’re short and podcast-style, usually around six to eight minutes, with one small practical action at the end.

06

How many lessons are there, and how long will it take?

The core path is more than 100 lessons, plus optional mini-courses. At about three lessons a week, it would take roughly a year, but you can go faster or slower. There’s no timetable to keep up with.

07

What do I need to take part?

Mostly your cat and a device to listen on. Some lessons may suggest simple everyday items, such as a brush or treats.

Founding rate and payment

01

What is the founding rate?

The first 50 founding guardians pay $30 a month, and the rate stays the same for as long as they remain members. Once founding places are filled, membership will be $45 a month.

02

Will my founding rate go up?

No. It stays at $30 a month for as long as you remain a member.

The community

01

What’s the community like?

A kind, moderated space for questions, small wins and reassurance when you’d like a little company. It’s not a leaderboard or a competition, and it’s not a substitute for veterinary care or one-to-one behaviour support.

Your cat and their health

01

What if my cat’s behaviour has changed suddenly?

Start with your vet, since sudden changes can have a medical cause. If you’re not sure where to start, the free 15-minute discovery call is a good first step.

02

What methods does the membership teach?

Humane, reward-based methods only. No punishment, no intimidation, no dominance. Everything is grounded in current feline behaviour research, and where a case needs a vet, I’ll say so.

03

Can you advise on my own cat’s specific problem?

The membership teaches the framework and the skills behind it. It doesn’t give individual diagnoses or tailored plans. For advice built around your cat and your household, a consultation is the right step.

Consultations and support

01

Why is it worth paying for help instead of looking up tips online?

Online advice is often scattered, contradictory or not suited to the cat in front of you. A consultation looks at your cat’s body language, environment and routines, then gives you a tailored written plan and practical next steps.

02

Are your methods research-based and humane?

Yes. The PAWS Approach is grounded in current feline behaviour research and uses positive, fear-free methods. Prevention and understanding come before correction; punishment and intimidation have no place in the work.

03

What if I have a medical concern about my cat?

The PAWS Approach is not a substitute for veterinary care. If your cat shows signs of illness or has a sudden behaviour change, please contact your vet first. Behaviour support can work alongside veterinary care when appropriate.

04

Who is a behaviour consultation for, and when should I consider one?

A consultation can help with concerns such as litter tray avoidance, scratching, fear, night-time activity or tension between cats. It can also focus on practical skills and cooperative care, or combine both. Start with a free discovery call to work out whether it’s the right fit and whether veterinary involvement is needed.

05

What if you’re not in Canberra or Queanbeyan?

In-person consultations are available in the Canberra and Queanbeyan area. If you’re further afield, online consultations are available across Australia by video call.
